Ice storms and freezing rain are more common and often more disruptive than snow, particularly in the Piedmont and metro Atlanta area, where even a thin glaze can cause widespread power outages, road closures, and travel chaos.
Major winter storms occur roughly every 5-15 years (e.g., 1989 Christmas snowstorm, 2014 Snowmageddon, 2011 January event), typically featuring light to moderate accumulations amplified by extreme cold, black ice, or poor preparation. The season is the quietest for severe weather in Georgia, with the primary threats being cold snaps, ice, and infrequent snow rather than tornadoes or severe thunderstorms.
